Wow - read this all bloggers!
How blogging less helped my blog
Well it has been some time now since I reduced my blogging frequency. Now, it is time to look at what has been happening since then and if this policy was beneficial for me or should I get back to overwhelming number of posts per week.
In general I am happy with current situation. I think GregWolejko.com benefits from this move and I really hope that you, the reader do too. There are few areas that I am really happy with the results and I definitely don’t regret decision that I made.
The way I see it is that there is one thing that seems to be worse than before the move and few that make me really happy. What are they? Well, read on.
Only thing that doesn’t make me smile is the number of visitors. Since I used to be posting every day I grew used to more day to day visitors. Since reducing my posting frequency, number of people coming to my blog daily dropped quite a bit. But it is not all that bad since…
I get the feeling that by putting more time and effort into every post I make I get more valuable visits. Let me explain. Although my number of visitors is dropping average time on site is increasing and also, number of page views is getting better. This is something that I am really happy about since my goal is not to gather as many people I can (although it would be nice) but to interest as many people as I can. I prefer one interested visitor to ten random people just scanning my site for a few seconds. So, I count this as a biggest benefit.
Next thing that actually surprised me is the quality of comments I get. Not that there was something wrong with comments I used to get, but I noticed that now I get longer more thought through comments and that is a good thing. Number of comments this site generates is still increasing and if you combine with the fact that number of viewers dropped it seems that even more people are actually commenting. And I am loving that.
As mentioned before I now have more time to invest in both research and other blog related activities. This improved quality of articles. I can tell that by getting more linkbacks from other blogs (meaning more people are finding my posts useful and worth linking to). I also now have time for doing a bit more networking and this really helped with getting more traffic from other sites.
All in all I find my new blogging schedule to be simply more beneficial. It also reduced the pressure of coming up with a good topic every day. I would definitely recommend rethinking blogging schedule to anyone that has enough generated content on site that doesn’t needs to post everyday.

Page Rank Drop?

www.u-g-h.com
I noticed something interesting today. I was playing with some SEO tools to understand how Google ranks sites a bit better and decided to check how many inbound links Google thinks this site has. I fired up Google and tried:
link:http://www.u-g-h.com/
Google reported a grand total of 248 websites that link to my home page. Now, I don’t think of myself as being vain, but I remember back in the days when my PageRank was 5 that I had tens of thousands of inbound links. So I popped off to ask other search engines what inbound links they though I had:
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.u-g-h.com&bwm=i&bwmf=u&bwms=p&fr=FP-tab-web-t&fr2=seo-rd-se
Well, Yahoo thinks I have over 33,000 links spread over almost 8000 pages. Now, I suspect this might have something to do with relevance. It’s possible to ask Google what websites it thinks are related to you:
gives a list of websites that Google thinks are related to this one. Which means Google has the ability to figure out what box to put your website in. My theory is that the drop in incoming links could come about from Google only caring about inbound links from related websites. So, if you had a website that lets you search for videographers for example, an inbound link from a website selling acne treatments might not count. I’m not saying this is a bad thing for the searching public as it increases the relevance of the searches. However it does mean that using Page Rank to gauge the value of a website is probably the wrong metric to use.
This theory could explain some things I considered strange on my website. For example, my comment email responder page has a Page rank of 0, even though there are hundreds of bloggers out there who wax lyrical about the plugin. But, if Google thinks the page is about PHP development (which is what it really is), and all the bloggers talking about it don’t run blogs about PHP development (which I’m pretty sure most of them don’t), then Google wouldn’t count those links. What do you think? Does the theory hold water?
The bottom line is that I believe PageRank is really just an internal measure that Google uses to figure out relative relationships between pages in a certain theme and is useless for comparing one webpage to another. Any thoughts here?

Be a Friend of Google!

We all must know by now that Google is the king of the search engines! This is because, it's "top secret weapon," the, page rank algorithm. Heres the definition taken from Wikipedia. (In mathematics, computing, linquistics and related disciplines, an algorithm is a sequence of instructions, often used for calcualtion, data processing. It is formally a type of effective method in which a list of well-defined instructions for completing a task will, when given an initial state, proceed through a well-defined series of successive states, eventually terminating in an end-state. The transition from one state to the next is not necessarily deterministic; some algorithms, known as probabilistic algorithms, incorporate randomness.)
So, we know that the Google page rank is based on how many links you have coming and, going to and from your pages. There are a lot of us out there, myself included that lack the understanding where the page rank really comes from. There's more to it than getting reciprocal links with respective page ranks. Internal and external links distribute page rank between pages. I found this helpful list that Google SEO guru's came up with to help us with improving our Google rankings and improve our websites Google Friendliness!
