7 things to do while not blogging

How often do you post?
I used to blog five times a week but recently I lowered my posting frequency to around 3. Why? Well it is a topic for a whole new blog post but generally I haven’t had time to deliver top quality posts and since top notch quality is my thing I decided to post less.
What I have gained by doing this? Well, a bit more free time that can be spent on writing better content. I have also gained perspective. What sort of a perspective? When blogging five days a week, process of writing and publishing was taking up around 90% of my time set for blogging. Now I can do all sorts of blog maintenance and still have some time to spare.
And here is the juicy part: What you should do while not blogging?
  • Social network - after my article on making site's prototypes was made popular on digg.com two things happened: I got tons of traffic and I started appreciate digg community having the inside of what are the benefits of getting dugg. Since then I spent more time networking on social sites (Stumbleupon is next on the list) to promote my content and let me tell you I see enormous results from doing it.
  • Visit other bloggers - another thing with having more time is that I can finally go past my RSS reader and actually go the sites I read every day and comment on the posts that have caught my attention. Increase in traffic on my site as a result of this strategy is yet to be seen but seeing this in action on Kacper's site keeps me in optimistic.
  • Catch up with mail - similar thing to the above. Besides commenting on sites I plan to launch direct campaign to promote myself to specific bloggers wishing for some link-love.
Tinker with your blog - add a little changes to your blog. Maybe another widget? Maybe work on how your posts are displayed? For me top priorities are “Me2.0” page where you will be able to find me on various social networks and “Best Posts” page where I will hand pick my best content for you to see.
  • Redesign your blog - this is a big one. Think if maybe it is a good time to redesign your blog? Add a little spark? Rebrand yourself? I know that GregWolejko.com needs new design and as soon as I will finish my secret project I am working on right now, my focus will be completely directed to making GregWolejko.com shine.
  • Plan - time to set up milestones. No goal is a real goal until it is measurable. It is time to set up a milestone goals for me and focus on reaching them. In my case this will be connected to getting more RSS subscribers and getting more other blogs linking back to me. But that’s only the beginning.
  • Have fun - this will be easy. Have fun. Relax. Get some time to rest and recharge your blogging batteries.

As you can see by getting more spare time I also got more focus points. One can argue if this is a god thing but I know it is. Hopefully soon both you and me will see benefits of my new blogging strategy.
I also hope that my list here helped you a little with setting your own blogging goals…
…or maybe you have other ideas? Something that I’ve missed here? Care to share? I am definitely interested in your opinion.

Wow - read this all bloggers!

I found this on http://gregwolejko.com/how-blogging-less-helped-my-blog/

How blogging less helped my blog
Well it has been some time now since I reduced my blogging frequency. Now, it is time to look at what has been happening since then and if this policy was beneficial for me or should I get back to overwhelming number of posts per week.
In general I am happy with current situation. I think GregWolejko.com benefits from this move and I really hope that you, the reader do too. There are few areas that I am really happy with the results and I definitely don’t regret decision that I made.
The way I see it is that there is one thing that seems to be worse than before the move and few that make me really happy. What are they? Well, read on.
Only thing that doesn’t make me smile is the number of visitors. Since I used to be posting every day I grew used to more day to day visitors. Since reducing my posting frequency, number of people coming to my blog daily dropped quite a bit. But it is not all that bad since…
I get the feeling that by putting more time and effort into every post I make I get more valuable visits. Let me explain. Although my number of visitors is dropping average time on site is increasing and also, number of page views is getting better. This is something that I am really happy about since my goal is not to gather as many people I can (although it would be nice) but to interest as many people as I can. I prefer one interested visitor to ten random people just scanning my site for a few seconds. So, I count this as a biggest benefit.
Next thing that actually surprised me is the quality of comments I get. Not that there was something wrong with comments I used to get, but I noticed that now I get longer more thought through comments and that is a good thing. Number of comments this site generates is still increasing and if you combine with the fact that number of viewers dropped it seems that even more people are actually commenting. And I am loving that.
As mentioned before I now have more time to invest in both research and other blog related activities. This improved quality of articles. I can tell that by getting more linkbacks from other blogs (meaning more people are finding my posts useful and worth linking to). I also now have time for doing a bit more networking and this really helped with getting more traffic from other sites.
All in all I find my new blogging schedule to be simply more beneficial. It also reduced the pressure of coming up with a good topic every day. I would definitely recommend rethinking blogging schedule to anyone that has enough generated content on site that doesn’t needs to post everyday.

The Urban Dictionary

The Urban Dictionary is something that can be utilized while blogging. For those of us that don't know the meaning of such words as, word vomit, def: (A point in a conversation where you say something that you really didn't mean to.) I'm sure a lot of us out there have used the commonly used analogy of "putting your foot in your mouth." Word vomit is just the latest way of saying this. I have used the Urban Dictionary quite frequently in my every day conversation with my teen-ager! Get use to it, our language is mutating into this "Urban" way of conversing! The more you know, the more you may be able to converse with the youth today without spatting word vomit!

"Urban Dictionary is more than a dictionary. It's a catalog of human interaction and popular culture created by hundreds of thousands of people, and read by millions. Urban Dictionary grows with hundreds of new definitions every day.
Hundreds of thousands of daily visitors read Urban Dictionary for witty, honest definitions that explain today's culture. urbandictionary.com is also available in print, in Urban Dictionary (2005) and Mo' Urban Dictionary (2007). Look for the 2009 Urban Dictionary Calendar, coming soon." (Snippet from Urban Dictionary Website.)

Do You Have the Writer's Block Bug?

I was passed on this little snippet from a book called, "No One Cares What You Had For Lunch: 100 Ideas for Your Blog." A colleague of mine recommends this book for anyone who may have a bit of the writer's block bug! Here's a bit of what's inside!
Don’t snort. Blogger’s block, which is the blog owner’s equivalent of writer’s block, does exist! I have had it many times myself. So, what can you do to get over this particular hurdle and move on to smooth sailing (typing)? Well, there are many remedies and solutions, and each blogger finds their own way to come up with decent writing material. Some of my favorites for getting over blogger’s block and being inspired enough to write again include:
Reading other blogs. You just never know when a particularly moving, thought provoking, memory triggering or even infuriating post will inspire you to write several paragraphs in response. Reading the news. There’s always something to talk about when reading the news. Instead of calling your mom or emailing your friend with, “Did you see that article about [article content]?!“, blog about it. Reading a book. A good book will inspire you to talk about it. Using better blogging books as a guide.

Hey why not check this out at your local library, or you can find it online here at: Amazon.
I love ebay, so, I went and, placed a bid on a copy for 5 bucks, and, won! I will let you know what I learned! If you have already read it, let us know what you got out of it!
Thanks!
